HRANS - Comparisons in Performance (B)
Date:  Wednesday, February 10, 2010     Time:  7:45 am - 9:30 am
Topic: Performance measurement issues
Guest Speaker: Dr. Blake Jelley
CHRP Recertification Points: 2.0
Presenter:  HRANS PEI Chapter
Location: Charlottetown, PE
HR Core Competency: RPC: 59 (Identifies, evaluates, and implements measurement systems for current and future job/team performance); performance appraisal processes, policies, and procedures; performance measurement issues; measurement and assessment tools and techniques.

This session will begin with a discussion of “rank and yank” and then go beyond that topic to review evidence pertaining to the validity (e.g., Goffin, Jelley, Powell, & Johnston, 2009) and fairness perceptions (Roch, Sternburgh, & Caputo, 2007) of “relative” versus “absolute” approaches to performance appraisal. Participants will be asked to think about ways to leverage some advantages of relative approaches while mitigating potential problems.

Learning Objectives:
In this session you will learn:

  • What is meant by "yank and rank."
  • How to distinguish between “absolute” and “relative” approaches to performance appraisal, and provide several examples of each (e.g., Behaviour Observation Scales; Relative Percentile Method).
  • To understand potential advantages and disadvantages of relative (rate comparison) appraisal systems.
  • How to make use of the Relative Percentile Method.
